Vivian Shipley, Professor of Creative Writing at Southern Connecticut State University, is the recipient of the 2015 Hackney Literary Award for Poetry. Her tenth book, Perennial, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and was a 2016-17 Paterson Poetry Prize Finalist. Other recent books include The Poet (2015) and All of Your Message Have Been Erased, (2010), both published by Southern Louisiana University Press. She has received the Library of Congress’s Connecticut Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to the Literary Community and the Connecticut Book Award for Poetry from the Center for the Book two times. Other awards include the Lucille Medwick Prize from the Poetry Society of America, the Robert Frost Foundation Poetry Prize, the Ann Stanford Poetry Prize from the University of Southern California, the Marble Faun Poetry Prize from the William Faulkner Society, and many others. Raised in Kentucky, she is a member of the University of Kentucky Hall of Distinguished Alumni. (She also served as the final judge for the 2016-17 Coe and West Creative Writing Scholarship competition at Appalachian State’).

The Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series

The Visiting Writers Series is named in honor of Hughlene Bostian Frank (class of 1968), a 2013 Appalachian Alumni Association Outstanding Service award recipient, past member of Appalachian's Board of Trustees, current board member of the ASU Foundation, and generous supporter of Appalachian State University.
