English 5835: Seventeenth-Century Literature

ENG 5835 Seventeenth-Century Literature will be taught by Dr. Susan C. Staub this Fall 2021 semester. It will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 3:15 to discuss the works of Milton and our relationship to nature through his writings.

From Dr. Staub,

"Milton reimagines not just the genesis story, but the cosmology of earth, heaven, and hell, populating the world of his poem not only with Satan and his minions, God and his angels, Adam and Eve, but also with an array of plants and animals. As he does so, recent scholars contend, Milton anticipates modern ecological issues and interrogates humanity’s essential relationship with the earth: dominion vs. stewardship; the treatment of animals; deforestation, and other issues of sustainability."
