ENG 3000: Approaches to Literary Studies

How does poetic language inform narrative spaces? Our “approach” will be through the prism of the lyric poem, using the “theory of the lyric” to look at how narrative and identity compete and intertwine in early modernist novels.

Topics include: imagination and memory; authenticity and art; nature and technology; domesticity and desire.

Course texts: Wallace Stevens, Collected Poems and Prose; Kate Chopin, The Awakening; Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time; Willa Cather, Lucy Gayheart; Jonathan Culler, Theory of the Lyric.
