Women, Tyranny, and Resistance
What can literature teach us about tyranny and resistance? I have two premises in mind: literary texts provide us with frames for understanding the world as it is; they also offer alternative narratives that help us to imagine other worlds and other possibilities. Stories can help us to think and live courageously, capaciously, and creatively. With those aims in mind, this discussion-based seminar will examine stories of tyranny and resistance by women writers. Texts may include Kate Horsley, Confessions of a Pagan Nun; Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale; Alice Walker, The Color Purple; Linda Hogan, Solar Storms; Nella Larsen, Passing; Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God.
