We are hiring two tenure-track Assistant Professors: one in Early American Literature and one in Victorian Literature.

Assistant Professor of Early American Literature

The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in American Literature from Beginnings until 1865 at the rank of Assistant Professor, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. The position will start on August 1, 2025. A PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or closely related field, and evidence of successful teaching are required. ABD candidates will be considered, but must have completed their degree by the date of hire.

The successful candidate will have experience teaching American Literature courses, and we welcome a wide range of secondary interests, such as transatlantic studies, world literature, digital humanities, and ecocritical studies. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, with the ability to teach introductory as well as major-specific and graduate courses. Candidates must have pedagogies that support students of all backgrounds.

Finalists will come to Boone for in-person campus visits in late January or February.

Assistant Professor of Victorian Literature

The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Victorian Literature at the rank of Assistant Professor, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. The position will start on August 1, 2025. A PhD in English and evidence of successful teaching and innovative scholarship are required. ABD candidates may apply, but must have completed their degree by the date of hire.

Desirable secondary areas include but are not limited to Environmental Humanities or Digital Humanities. Candidates should have at least two years of college level teaching experience, including some experience teaching literature. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, with the ability to teach introductory as well as major-specific and graduate courses. Candidates must have pedagogies that support students of all backgrounds. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program.

Candidates should submit a cover letter and CV. Only electronic applications will be considered. Review of applications will begin January 3, 2025. No other materials are required at this time; letters of reference, teaching and research statements, and writing samples may be requested from candidates after the initial review. The committee plans to conduct Zoom interviews in late January. Finalists will come to Boone for in-person campus visits in February.

Note

These are both full-time, 9-month, tenure-track positions. Teaching load is 3/3, provided faculty produce at least 2 peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent) every 3 years. Service expectations include advising students, participating in committee work, and other related service activities.
