Registration open for 2026 Appalachian Mountains Writing Project Summer Institute

BOONE, N.C. — Registration is now open for the 2026 Appalachian Mountains Writing Project (AMWP) Summer Institute, taking place June 8–26 in a hybrid format.

This year’s theme, “Unearthed: Writing the Hidden Stories of People and Place,” invites participants to explore the hidden, untold, or marginalized narratives embedded in landscapes, communities, and personal histories. The theme resonates deeply in the Appalachian region, where voices have often been stereotyped or silenced, and where both people and place carry complex legacies of resilience and resistance.

The institute will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with the opening (June 8) and closing (June 26) sessions held at Appalachian State University's Boone campus. All other sessions will take place online. Participants may choose between a morning-only option (9 a.m.–12 p.m.) or a full‑day option (9 a.m.–4 p.m.). Morning sessions will feature synchronous discussions and workshops; afternoons will be reserved for asynchronous writing, reading, and research.

The AMWP Summer Institute is open to K-14 teachers in all subject areas, as well as graduate students. Admission to the institute requires the completion of a four-year degree at an accredited college or university.

Academic Credit Options

The academic-credit option allows current and returning graduate students in App State’s Department of English to earn up to 6 credit hours. Other participants may enroll as graduate students within 12 months of completing the institute and apply earned credit toward a degree.

Participants taking the institute for credit will register through AppalNet for:

  • ENG 5530: 3 credit hours — Meets 9 a.m.–12 p.m., Monday–Friday

  • ENG 5400: 6 credit hours — Meets 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday–Friday

Standard graduate tuition rates apply.

Non‑Credit and CEU Options

A non‑credit option is available for educators seeking Continuing Education Units (CEUs):

  • Morning-Only: 6 CEUs — $100

  • Full‑Day: 12 CEUs — $200

Fees include all books and materials. Non-credit participants may register at appstate.irisregistration.com/Form/26AMWP.
