English 2180: Introduction to Comics and Graphic Novels - Fischer (Spring 2023)

In this course, we’ll first consider how comic books are produced—written and drawn—and discuss comics form, focusing on such issues as realistic vs. cartoony representation, the cognitive “leap” a reader makes between panels, and the comic book page as graphic map. Then we’ll survey the history of American comics, with a unit on superhero comics (featuring work by such major figures as Jack Kirby and Alan Moore) and another unit on the underground, alternative, and self-produced comics made possible by new audiences and avenues of production and distribution.

Tuesdays & Thursdays  2:00-3:15 pm; in person
