“Poisoned at the Source”
The twentieth century has often been called the "American" century: the decades in which the USA became a global superpower, with wealth, political influence, and military might seldom before seen in world history. But it was also a century in which the country repeatedly tore itself apart and tried to reassemble the broken pieces, a century riven with existential anxieties and angry conflicts over what the nation meant and who it was for. Great novels traced this tumultuous, often paradoxical history. From modernism to postmodernism, from the inner city to outer space, from the privileged center of society to its transgressive margins, through literature of diverse styles and perspectives we'll seek to understand the century that made the world we live in now.
