Jane Austen Lives!
On December 16, 2025, Jane Austen fans everywhere will be celebrating her 250th birthday! In this course, we will be celebrating it as well, reading her novella "Lady Susan" and five of her novels. We will also explore her incredible cultural legacy: films, television series, biographies, fan fiction, Regency costumes, reenactments, festivals, and Jane Austen weekends. What makes Austen such an iconic figure? Why is her influence still so prevalent today? Why are there so many Janeites (Rudyard Kipling addresses this phenomenon in “The Janeites” [1924])? These are just some of the questions we will tackle in this course. Period dress will be optional.
