In this graduate course, students will read literary works on border crossing that highlight the interconnected and multilingual world in which we live. Beginning with the testimonies in 1600 of Teresa Martín and Luisa Menéndez, students will gain an understanding of genealogies of Ethnic American literatures that transcend linguistic and national borders. From there, students will read works by Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich, Gloria Anzaldúa, Oscar Hokeah, and Patty Krawec, among others. By the end of the semester, students will have a complex understanding of the notions of borders and border crossing in Ethnic American literatures.
