ENG 5548: Theorizing Adaptation

As ubiquitous as it is often belittled, the practice of adaptation has only accelerated in our contemporary transmedia landscape. Using a few canonical authors as case studies, this course will give students an opportunity to explore the history and theory of literary adaptation, especially the discourses of fidelity, intertextuality, media specificity, and fan-inflected transformations across page, stage, and screens of all kinds. Come ready to for a crash-course in the study of adaptations as we encounter films, comics, games, and more based on your favorite pieces of literature!
