ENG 4890: Brit Lit 1900-45
Literary Modernism and Beyond

Virginia Woolf proclaimed that, “On or about December 1910 human character changed,” basically ushering in aspects of Modernism, which is characterized by a conscious, radical break from traditional Victorianism and its forms. It is in part a response to rapid urbanization and World War I, prioritizing experimentation, stream-of-consciousness, non-linear narratives, and subjective experience to reflect a fragmented, disillusioned world. In surprising ways, Modernism lays the groundwork for many artists today and I imagine for decades to come. So come join us for a lively discussion of some of the Modernists.
