Course Description
English 4830 will examine a selection of Shakespeare’s early works in three different formats: as written texts, stage productions, and films. We will focus on the structure and language of the plays, their dramatic form and genre, and their relation to the social and political tensions of Shakespeare’s time and our own. Sometimes dubbed the first screen writer, Shakespeare wrote his plays for performance so as we consider his scripts, we will also look at various filmed productions (theatrical and cinematic adaptations) in order to analyze how directors transform and reinterpret them to reflect particular moments in time.
