ENG 4730/4731: Studies in the Novel - Mike Wilson, Spring 2023

In this section of ENG 4730/4731, we will focus on a range of American prize-winning (or otherwise interesting in a literary, historical, or cultural sense) novels from the last half-century or so. Possible novels may include John Williams’s Butcher’s Crossing, Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Don DeLillo’s White Noise, Marianne Robinson’s Gilead, among others. Where film adaptations exist, we’ll take a look at clips from those as well. Course requirements will include short written responses to one reading assignment per week, one short paper, and one longer research paper.

For questions, contact Mike Wilson at wilsonmt@appstate.edu.
