ENG 4300: Capstone in Rhetoric & Technical Writing with Dr. Sarah Long

“Design Your Life”

Your English degree is the beginning of a life, not the end of a major. Using Designing Your Life and How to Live a Meaningful Life (Burnett & Evans, Stanford), this course will help you decide what you want to do and who you want to be, and then help you build a portfolio and a plan for both.

  • Build a professional digital portfolio of your best work
  • Prototype career paths using design and systems thinking
  • Write resumes, cover letters, and grad school materials that get read
  • Learn to interview and compete in a job market shaped by AI
  • Hear from guest speakers across editing, publishing, social media, and rhetoric and technical writing
  • Present at the ENG Department’s Capstone Day

Who it’s for?
While primarily for those in the RTW program, anyone in the English department who wants to graduate with a diverse writing portfolio, a specific plan to approach the job market in your field, and a sense of what a well-lived working life means to you can enroll in this course. It is required for RTW majors and would be an elective for all other majors who have their own capstones. Prereqs: ENG/RC 2001 and ENG 3090.
