“Experimental Forms”
This class will serve as an upper-level poetry writing workshop through the lens of 20th and 21st century experimental writing. Together, we will explore how the composition of poetry has evolved during various literary movements from modernism (i.e. imagism, objectivism) and postmodernism (i.e. Black Mountain, New York School, Black Arts Movement, L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E) to expand our engagement with nontraditional poetics. We will also look closely at the ways in which small-press publishing builds an aesthetic and material lineage for writer’s working today. Some poets under consideration will be Bernadette Mayer, Hannah Wiener, John Ashbery, Susan Howe, Russell Atkins, and more.
