ENG 3508: Honors Food Writing

Dr. Melissa Stone
Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm (hybrid modality)

This course explores the intersections of food and writing through several critical-creative projects. Throughout the course, students practice writing, research, and design skills, while developing the ability to communicate about food in ways that are rhetorically effective. Students begin by examining recipes as rhetorical texts to learn how to write with technical clarity. They then engage in creative food writing to develop narrative skills and explore how memory and identity factor into compelling food stories. The course next turns to food journalism by emphasizing ethical, cultural, and political considerations of the genre. Students also collaborate on a podcasting project about a food topic to gain practical experience with a popular communication genre. The course concludes with critical reflection which encourages students to evaluate their growth and synthesize their learning across multiple projects.
