ENG 3130: Narrative and Medicine

ENG 3130: Narrative and Medicine

  • General Education, LS Designator
  • Elective within the Medical Humanities Minor

This class explores the practical connections between literature and medicine which can help us bring singular attention to the care of patients, recognize the ethical obligations of the health professions, and foster a relationship-centered clinical practice. Beginning with discussion of the building-blocks of narrative – characterization, focalization, narration, temporality, plot, and style – we will read and analyze short literary works to deepen our capacities to hear and understand others’ stories. We will also consider how these techniques inform and enrich medical narratives, including parallel charts, rounds, and reflective journaling.
