”The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us.” – Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451
Reading is critical thinking, creative thinking, and empathetic listening to the world with our hearts. We read books to improve our skills in these three areas with evidentiary based discussions and performances. These three are also the foundation for community and citizenship.
American philosopher, Martha Nussbaum explains the idea in the following way: “In these various ways, narrative imagination is an essential preparation for moral interaction. Habits of empathy and conjecture conduce to a certain type of citizen and a certain form of a community: one that cultivates a sympathetic responsiveness to another’s needs, and understands the way circumstances shape those needs, while respecting separateness and privacy” (Cultivating Humanity: A Classical Defense of Reform in Liberal Education)
