Course Description
This course serves as an introduction for both English majors and non-majors to the World Literature with a focus on texts created by Indigenous peoples across the globe. This course will examine a variety of genres including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and film created by and focusing on global Indigenous communities. Exploring these works together will highlight how the effects of colonization have impacted Indigenous communities across the world in somewhat similar ways. As many scholars have noted, colonization, especially settler colonialism, is ongoing and not simply a historical event. While the type of colonization, the affected populations, and the locations may differ, many of these communities are finding trans-Indigenous solidarity over issues such as systemic racism, environmental rights, and sovereignty.
