ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF THE 2015-16 TRUMAN CAPOTE LITERARY TRUST SCHOLARSHIP FOR CREATIVE WRITING (PROSE)

First Place: Andrew Bennett

$3,420 Scholarship Award

Runner-up: Sara Bickers

Final Judge: Novelist Wiley Cash

Judge’s Comments:

Winner: Andrew Bennett

"Mr. Bennett's portrayal of human suffering takes both the emotional and physical forms. But his fiction also reveals that all suffering can be overcome. His writing is clear, graceful, and sensitive." Also, please let him know I appreciated his nod to Richard Bausch's story "Tandolfo the Great." He'll know what I'm talking about.

Runner-up: Sara Bickers

"Ms. Bickers' fiction perfectly captures the struggles of young adults attempting to come to terms with a number of challenges: first love, lost love, ambition. Her writing tempers her characters' intense emotions with realistic dialogue. I found 'The Night of the Incident' particularly powerful as it represents so many experiences when life gets out of hand."

Wiley Cash is the New York Times
bestselling author of A Land More Kind Than Home and This Dark Road to Mercy, published by William Morrow/HarperCollins

Thanks to all entrants! Next year’s competition will be in Poetry, with a mid-March deadline. This competition is open to rising or continuing juniors or seniors with an English major and Creative Writing concentration.
