Greetings from the Interim Chair
On behalf of the Department of English, I would like to welcome you to our community of learners. We are students, teachers, staff, community leaders, and scholars who are passionate about teaching, reading, writing, and learning. We offer two degrees at the undergraduate level and a Master’s at the graduate level. Our Bachelor of Science students graduate and become proven leaders among their peers as some of the best high school teachers in North Carolina. Our Bachelor of Arts students are equally impressive and graduate into professional careers that require high levels of analysis and written communication skills. Many of our graduates go on to distinguish themselves in Master’s and Doctoral programs. Among our faculty, we proudly conduct diverse scholarly interests. Faculty teach, research, and serve a variety of academic areas, including studies in British, American, and World literatures, creative writing, rhetoric and composition, professional writing, film studies, secondary education, and folklore. Our faculty members take great pride in teaching, service, and research.
Whether you are alumni who are just checking up on what the department is “up to now” or students who are looking into degree programs as prospective ASU students or are currently enrolled, why not take a closer look at the Department of English Department? We offer vocational opportunities and advice for a wide-range of possibilities.
I welcome you to browse our website and learn more about English Studies at Appalachian State University. I also invite you to contact me with any questions you have about our programs, degrees, students, or faculty.
Best wishes,
James M. Ivory
Interim Chair & Associate Professor
