Edelma Huntley joined the Appalachian English Department faculty as an 18th-century British drama specialist with additional expertise in 20th-century American drama and playwriting. Her interests changed over the years, first to Asian American fiction and drama, and more recently to food and culture. She has taught 18th-century British literature, drama and playwriting, Asian American literature, and food culture. Her current scholarly project is a nearly completed book on the narrative function of gastronomy in detective fiction. From 1995 to 2000, she served as associate dean of the Graduate School; from 2000-2005, she was senior associate dean. She became dean of the Graduate School in January 2006. She currently serves on the executive committee of the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools, as the president-elect of the North Carolina Council of Graduate Schools, and on the advisory board of the Pisgah Astronomical Research, Science, and Education Center.
